Facebook Representative Expelled From Cambodia

Phnom Penh: The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has decided to expel the Facebook representative from Cambodia after investigating the irregularities in Facebook's services for some users in Cambodia.

In a statement issued on June 30, 2023, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications stated that Facebook in Cambodia has several irregularities, including the creation of fraudulent accounts, privacy risks associated with private data, the use and collection of private data, the dissemination of fake information, lack of accountability and transparency, and interference in the country's politics.

The Ministry added, "We have decided to expel the Facebook representative from Cambodia and cease all activities such as company representation, communication with the Royal Government, and partnerships with the private sector in the Kingdom of Cambodia from this point forward."

The decision to expel the Facebook representative from Cambodia comes just one day after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen decided to delete his Facebook page.

In a special voicemail from Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia on the night of June 30, he stated that there is no complete ban on this major social network in Cambodia, but the government may find it difficult to accept the absence of a representative from the company in Cambodia.

He explained his decision to delete his Facebook page due to the presence of numerous fake accounts and difficulties in protecting the page. He mentioned that the cancellation was a response to META's decision to suspend his Facebook page for six months.

He expressed dissatisfaction with Meta Company because it showed bias by not taking any action despite the opposition's use of provocative and war-like language and insulting the King.
